    How does this suit look?

Maybe I'm headed for a new career?

    Astro

:)  Too bad I'm afraid of heights!  HA.

This past Saturday Adam and I went to the Museum of Flight to see a special Mars exhibit.  This astronaut has always been there and we've passed it several times, but never taken a picture.  I wanted one of Adam, but he wouldn't put his head in there so I did.  Cracks me up just looking at it!

    Happy Birthday Mom!

It's my Mom's birthday today and I'm hoping she has a great day.

    006

I wish I could be there with her to celebrate.  Or she could be here since it's a tiny bit warmer and a lot less snowy - haha!  Either way would be good though!!

    Happy Birthday Mom!  Love you!

    It's a major award!

On Saturday my friend Carrie gave me a cool blog award.

    Ymmd_award_2_3

The "you make my day award" is circulating around a bunch of knitting blogs these days and I think it's a cool idea.  There are a lot of blogs I read on a semi-daily basis and many of them do indeed make my day.

I've never gotten a blog award before.  When Carrie emailed me all I could think of was the Dad in A Christmas Story talking about his leg lamp being "a major award."  I can't tell you how over-used this phrase is in my family.  :)

Anyhoo, Carrie is part of the knitting group that I attend and she's awesome.  She's hilarious and I always know it's going to be a fun knit night when she's there.  We've shared many a laugh over the past several months of knitting together and I look forward to more!  She's also a really good knitter.  Thanks Carrie!

During my blog-trolling tonight I discovered that my knitting friend Kat also included me in her award list.  Kat is part of a special swap that I've been doing for the last year and I think she was one of my first swap partners.  We've kept in touch over email and I'm a regular reader of her blog.  Not only is Kat a great swapper, she's an amazing knitter and spinner and excellent email buddy.  Thanks Kat!

So, now it's my turn to give away the You Make My Day Award.  Besides Carrie and Kat here are some of my favorite blogs:

    • Drunken Purl - Denise is my cousin and I'm so excited that she's finally blogging!  I set her up with this blog when I was home in November and look forward to reading it every day.  Not only is Denise my cousin, but she's a really great friend.  Before moving out here you could regularly find us together or on the phone and I miss that!  It's great to read her blog and keep up with her life.
    • City Lakers - My cousin Dan is the main poster on this blog.  He's married to my cousin Denise - see above.  I love his blog because he's a great photographer.  Dan and I share photography in common and have had many a good techie chat about the subject.  He does a great job of documenting family events which is very cool for me to see being all the way out here.
    • ScreenShots - Lindsay is my friend from scrapbooking.  She's got one of the best blogs out here.  Totally hilarious and inspiring.  It never disappoints.
    • Peacock Chic - This blog really inspires me.  Her knitting and sewing projects are always really well done.
    • Carole Knits - Carole is another special swap partner.  She regularly updates her blog and I love reading.  She always knits the coolest socks and has great photos too.

I have many more favorites than this, but I'm going to stop there because I'm out of time.  :)

    FO - Koolhaas Hat

I finished Adam's Koolhaas Hat last Sunday night.

    Khfo1

After blogging about it I went back to knitting and it only took me about another hour to complete.

    Khfo2

He's been wearing it all week and said it's keeping him very warm.

    Khfo3

Even though I had a rough start with this pattern I'm really happy with how it turned out.  It's fits him perfectly and he really loves the custom fit aspect of it.  He's been wanting a tight winter hat that covers his ears for the longest time.

This was a really fast project too.  Something that could easily be knit as a last minute gift.  One of these days I'm going to start one for myself because I really just love that stitch pattern.  I've got a leftover skein of Blue Sky Dyed Cotton in Red all ready to go.

    • Koolhaas Hat by Jared Flood, Interweave Holiday Edition 2007 or here
    • Cascade 220 Heathers - I can't remember the name of the color, but it's dark grey
    • Size 6 & 8 32" KP Options - Magic Looped this to avoid buying 16" circs
    • About 4 hours total knitting time (once I got the pattern down)

    WIP - Seed Stitch Cardigan

I started a new project on Monday night.  I'm trying to use up some of the yarn in my stash before I buy anything new.  I don't have a huge stash compared to most, but my yarn storage boxes are overflowing so I'm definitely running out of room.  I also need to make room for all the roving I plan on buying to spin.  :)

A lot of my stash was purchased without a project in mind or gifted to me in a swap.  Ravelry has been the greatest resource in this stashbusting quest.  Being able to search a yarn in your stash and view all the projects that other knitters have used the yarn for is awesome.  I've found a project for almost everything in my stash just by searching that way!

So, my first stashbusting project is a little cardigan for my niece.  The free pattern is the Seed Stitch Cardigan from Lion Brand.  I'm about 3/4 of the way up the back.  (It's not a bright green like the photo, more of a soft spring green)

    Seedstitchcardi_2

I'm using up some Lion Brand Cotton-Ease in Lime and Stone.  I didn't have anything more girly to use in place of Stone, but I think it will be a great spring cardigan anyways.  I plan on making it more girly by using pink or purple buttons.

If you're on Ravelry, here's the link

That's all I've got to share today.  It's been a busy week with work and school and I'm really glad it's almost the weekend!

    It wasn't the yarn...

    Regarding Koolhaas...

It wasn't the yarn.  It was user error.

On Friday night while knitting the hat it dawned on me that I was reading the chart incorrectly.  I wasn't alternating RPCs and LPCs - just knitting a whole row of each.  That's the reason my cables looked flat and that's the reason it seemed like I only had one side of the diamond patten.  Because I did only have one side of the pattern.  :)

So, I ripped it back to the ribbing that night.

    Khrib

Yesterday and today have been productive getting the hat back to where I was.  I feel like I didn't lose much time because this really is a quick project...when you're doing it the right way!  I'm reading the chart correctly now and I'm actually almost done with the entire hat.

    Kh2

My cables are popping and I've got perfect diamond shapes.

    Kh3

The color is not an issue either like I thought it would be.  I really like how it's turning out in the dark heather gray.  Adam's been trying it on along the way and it looks great on him.  It fits perfect.  I'm going to do one more cable repeat because he'd like it to cover his ears completely.  After that repeat I'll be ready to decrease for the crown and then I'm done.

    FO photos coming soon.

In other knitting news, I picked up a new book yesterday.

    Voguesock

This book was on my Christmas list, but it didn't end up under my tree.  :)  We stopped by Barnes and Noble yesterday and I decided to treat myself.  I had a coupon, my member discount and a gift card so I ended up getting a great deal.

I love this book already.  I flipped through it about 10 times last night.  I love all the stories about the history of sock knitting, the construction information and the stitch patterns.  I can't wait to dive in and start my first sock from the book.  I'm still deciding what it will be.

That's all for tonight - I hope everyone had a great weekend!

    Eye Candy Friday

I snapped this photo Monday night on my way out of work.  It's a terrible photo, technically speaking, but I wanted to make sure I got the color of that sky before it disappeared.

    Pinksky

    Pretty huh?

I'm so glad to have my little point & shoot now - I would have missed this otherwise.

    Have a great weekend!

    Injured reserve

    I think I've got a knitting injury.

Well, maybe it's not that dramatic.  :)  But, I do have a seriously stressed-out elbow on my left arm.  It started to hurt so badly today that I was having a hard time just bending my elbow.  It's kind of weird though because I really haven't knit much over the past few days.  Just a few hours here and there, but nothing major.

    Icyhot

Stopped and got some of these IcyHot patches on the way home from work.  I'm not sure if they are really helping.  I've had one on for about 4 hours now and it's still freezing cold.  I wonder if I got a bum patch because it hasn't gotten even luke warm yet.  A minute ago I held my arm in front of our heat vent - sort of like a ghetto IcyHot patch.  It still didn't help.  The second I walked away it was freezing cold again.

Hopefully this pain will just go away soon.  I have items to knit and roving to spin and no time to waste on injured reserve!

    Anyways.

Here are a couple of random photos I took yesterday on my quest for more photos.

Adam and I stop at Starbucks on our way into work for drinks a couple of mornings per week.  Yesterday I got some breakfast too.  Here it is on my desk:

    Sb

I also did some more knitting on Koolhaas yesterday morning.  Usually I get to work at least an hour earlier than I open the office.  Adam and I carpool and he goes in earlier than me.  It's a great, quiet block of time for knitting and homework.  But, mostly knitting.

    Kh

I think Koolhaas might be a keeper after all.  I'm still deciding, but leaning more toward finishing now that I'm finished with 3 pattern repeats.  I'll update more on that later.

I'm off to nurse my arm with some JujyFruits.

    ABC Along 2008

Right after the first of the year I signed up for the ABC Along.  Ravelry group is here

    Abcalong150pxwide

I've been working on my A photos the last few weeks and will post them this weekend.  They are due by 01/19 and then we move on to B.

If you haven't joined already, then you should!  (I'm talking to you Denise and your new camera!)  You still have time to work on A and be right on schedule.  Some people are taking only one photo per letter, but I am going to be taking as many as I can think of.  If any scrapbookers are reading - this isn't just for knitters.  The photos can be of anything so you can join too!

I'm glad I signed up because it's reminding me to take more photos.  Every New Year's Eve I make it a point to sit down on my computer and look through photos from the previous year.  I never get around to printing photos any more and barely have time for scrapbooking so I think of it as a digital photo album.  Well, this past New Year's Eve I was really disappointed.  I had gone months without taking a single photo.  That's so not like me, but life took over in 2007.  I was so busy with work and school that we just didn't seem to get out as much as we usually do.  Another disappointment was that I literally found 2 photos of Adam and I together - yes, TWO photos in all of 2007.

So, this year I'm recommitted to taking more photos.  The ABC Along is great and I will definitely take advantage of the creative aspect of the challenge.  I also have been trying to take (almost) daily photos with my little camera and even took a few this morning.  Just random stuff that nobody else cares about, but documentation of my days nonetheless.  Less attempts at the "perfect photo" and more attempts at just getting something written to my memory cards.

Other photography plans for this year are to be more diligent about printing for photo albums and frames.  I probably won't get to scrapbook much this year again, but I'd really like to have more photo albums floating around.

And my question to you is - are you documenting your days with photos?
